Condition

The movement is running at time of cataloging, however it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement. Reference number between the upper lugs read 6263. Case back reads reference 6265. The upper chronograph pusher is later replaced. Case in overall good vintage condition with wear, scuffing, markings and signs of sympathetic polish consistent with age and use. Scuffing to the case bands. Some oxidation especially between the pushers and crown which may benefit from cleaning. Upper right lug with some more visible marks and nicks. Surface wear to the case back. Crystal glazing with scratches, scuffs and debris. Dial in overall very good vintage condition with light markings. heavier markings to the white sub dials. White sub dials with some darker perimeter markings. Oxidation to the luminescent areas. Original acrylic bezel with some interior areas of loss. Chronograph function working properly. Movement in good condition. John Laurence, an American journalist, has used this watch since it was new to time the lengths of his TV news reports for CBS News, ABC News and PBS. As a foreign correspondent, he has covered wars in Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, East Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Israel, Egypt, Iran, Afghanistan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Yugoslavia, Ireland, Angola, Rhodesia, South Africa, Colombia, Ethiopia and Cyprus. He has reported many of the most important news events of our times including the fall of the Berlin Wall, the student protests in Tiananmen Square and the collapse of the Soviet Union. His work has received 10 Emmy awards, 2 Columbia-duPont awards, and the Overseas Press Club of America's George Polk Memorial Award for "best reporting in any medium requiring exceptional courage and enterprise abroad." Laurence has been described (in Esquire magazine) as "the best war correspondent of his generation."

John Laurence is an American reporter, author and documentary filmmaker whose frontline reporting for CBS, ABC and PBS have earned him a reputation as one of the finest foreign correspondents of his generation. Wearing his Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, he has covered many of the most important events of our times including thirty-seven wars, revolutions and riots at home and abroad. His work has won every major award for broadcast journalism. An example of his reporting can be seen on YouTube under the title 'John Laurence Vietnam War U.S. Platoon in Combat'. We are pleased to present this well-used and beautifully preserved timepiece on behalf of the original owner.
