• cal. 17'" nickel lever movement, 18 jewels • three dimensional three tone dial, applied yellow gold radial Roman numerals to the chapter ring, Breguet hands, outer ring with pearled minute divisions, silver openwork centerfield with scrolling foliate flowers • 18k yellow gold case, finely engraved case band, vertical guilloché case back with scrolling foliate vines and six ascher cut sapphires • case, dial, and movement signed

Condition

The movement is running at time of cataloguing, however it was not tested for the accuracy of time or duration of the power reserve and may need service at the buyer's discretion. Please note that Sotheby's does not guarantee the future working of the movement. Case in overall fair condition with wear, scuffing and scratches consistent with age and use. Case bezels and bands with heaviest wear and light oxidation. A more visible area of oxidation between 12-1 and surrounding sapphires on the case back. Case back with scuffing and scratches throughout. Dial in good vintage condition with light and attractive oxidation. Breguet hands with very light oxidation. Some darker surface markings to the edges of the dial. Movement in excellent condition.

Catalogue Note

Accompanied by an Extract from the Archives confirming the year of manufacture in 1916 and date of sale on January 31st, 1920 with a vertical guilloché case back with chiseled border and 6 sapphires.

Prior to their acquisition, Patek Philippe ordered many of their dials from Stern Frères SA, arguably the finest dial makers in the world. The present example has an extremely attractive and well preserved openwork dial with silver engraving. Fig. 1 is a wonderful example of a similar dial, representing Stern Frères' mastery of the technical applications metal allowed.
