Catalogue Note

Accompanied by John M.R. Knudsen, The Jürgensen Dynasty, 2013 and a copy of the catalogue c. 1992 showing the first presentation of reference 3

One of the most visually arresting perpetual calendar wristwatches of the 20th century, the Ref. 3 was made in a limited edition of 100 pieces in either yellow, pink gold or platinum. Introduced towards the end of 1992, as the natural successor to the reference 2, the Ref. 3’s difference is found in the state of wind indicator. Amazingly, Urban Jürgensen & Sønner incorporated this additional complication without increasing the thickness of the already thin movement which has a thickness of just 2.4mm. This miniaturized mechanism, together with some three dozen parts was developed by Derek Pratt – each steel surface is carefully grained and the edges angled and polished to perfection.  For further information on Ref. 3 see, Knudsen, J.,The Jürgensen Dynasty, p.328 and Treffry, T., Derek Pratt Watchmaker FBHI, British Horological Institute, 2012, pp. 30-31

The harmonious and elegant appearance of the silver dial is complimented by the typical Urban Jürgensen & Sønner diamond-finished gold hands, which require many hours of hand work to finish them to perfection; the moon display alone requires over twenty operations to produce the blued steel background, with inserted gold moon discs and the stars punched in one by one.
