Catalogue Note

Jacques Joseph Maquart was a painter and engraver best known for his views of architectural landmarks. He worked in pastels as well as other mediums.

He was born in Reims, which by the 1870s boasted a sizable Jewish community, many of whom migrated there from Alsace and Moselle. In 1875, the community named its first Rabbi and a large new synagogue was consecrated in 1879.
