Condition

Overall in good condition. The wood surfaces present with scattered minor scuffs, faint scratches, shallow nicks and dents consistent with age and gentle use. The top surface two to three with scattered faint ring marks, the largest of which measures approximately 3 in. in diameter, none of which are overtly visible. The rear proper left corner with a very minor chip, consistent with gentle use. The rear freeform edge of the desk is highly figured and the burls all intact and original. The coloration of the matchbooked desk top is a rich and warmly hued walnut, with less yellow notes than conveyed in the catalogue illustration. The surfaces of the pedestal with a few minor chips and nicks as well as an isolated area of nicks concentrated to the rear proper right corner, measuring approximately 2 x 1 in. The rear top surface of the pedestal with two hairline cracks (longest is 8 in.). Both are stable and not visible when the desk is assembled. The table top is removable for shipment and assembled via insertion into a central peg on the pedestal. A highly figured slab with interesting undulations and burls, it is characteristic of Nakashima's finest work. Acquired direct from the artist as his career was beginning to gain traction, the desk is sold with a copy of the original 1958 invoice. Of lovely proportions, the desk presents very well overall.
