    base incised R.W. Martin + Bros./London + Southall
  • glazed stoneware with painted wood base

Provenance

Dorothy G. Hale & Company, Chicago/London
Acquired from the above by the present owner

Condition

Overall in very good condition. The jar has been examined under blacklight and appears to be in original condition with no evidence of prior restoration. The glazed stoneware surfaces with light surface dirt to the recessed areas of the design consistent with age. The aperture of the base with three minute chips, not visible when the jar is assembled. The head and body of the bird are possibly associated. The wood base is likely original with some light surface scratches, edge abrasions, minor dents, and some light rubbing consistent with age and gentle handling. A great example of Martin Brothers' fantastic birds universe.
