Description

  • George Nakashima
  • Set of Three-Tier Wall Shelves
  • American black walnut

Provenance

Commissioned directly from the artist by the present owner, 1970

Condition

Overall very good condition. When viewed in person the wood presents with an overall richer and warmer tonality compared to the printed catalogue illustration. The wood surfaces with some scattered, very light surface scratches, minor abrasions and minor dents consistent with age and gentle use. One of the shelves with several old wormholes at the midpoint of the lateral edge, stable. Another shelf with a row (approximately 4 inches long) of small, concentrated dents on the top edge at the midpoint, likely resulting from the wood being pressed against a textured surface. The adjustable wall brackets with traces of white house paint along their back edges. A highly functional design with beautiful freeform edges and rich figuring and coloration to the wood.
