Description

  • Stoneware
the gently rounded sides rising to a metal-bound rim, the center incised with a freely-drawn lotus blossom and broad leaf issued from furled leaves and stem within an incised medallion, covered with a cream-colored glaze extending over the short footring

Provenance

Bluett & Sons, London (according to label).
Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Bernat (1896-1982).
Sotheby's New York, 7th November 1980, lot 101.

Condition

The rim has been polished and there is expected wear to the bowl's surface and footring. There are minor manufacturing imperfections, including scattered small dark spots and glaze gaps to the exterior. The rim was added after the Sotheby's New York sale of 7th November 1980; it is unevenly applied but still secure. Five labels are applied to the exterior and base.
