the globular body rising to a short straight neck, carved through the dark brown glaze with two large peony sprays and two butterflies, framed by a floral scroll border at the neck and a keyfret band below

Provenance

Collection of Ambassador Dr. Carlos Augusto R. Santos-Neves (b. 1944), acquired in the 1980s.

Condition

There is a U-form crack extending halfway up the body, with an associated approx. 2.5 x 1.5-cm restored area to the exterior. The rim has an approx. 4-cm hairline crack and minor chips to the inner rim. The glaze has expected wear consistent with age and use, including crazing around the shoulders making it slightly matte.
