Description

  • lacquered wood
of circular form, the cover well carved through deep layers of cinnabar lacquer to the top with two scholars conversing under moonlight, one carrying a qin, all set within a landscape of trees and rockwork, the sides with a continuous keyfret band, repeated to the box, the interior and base lacquered black, Japanese wood box (3)

Condition

The top surface of the cover in good general condition, and the box and cover stable overall. The interior and exterior sides of the cover and box with expected age cracks, minor losses to the carved keyfret, and touch-ups to the outer bands. The well of the box with a few small spots of lifted or lost lacquer and superficial scratches from use. The interiors and base appear to have been relacquered in the past.
