Description

  • cinnabar lacquer (Rhus verniciflua )
of rectangular section, the edges of the top moulding downwards and inwards to a thin beaded band, supported on a constricted waist terminating in a beaded-edged cusped apron and four cabriole ruyi legs, the top skilfully carved with a large cusped cartouche enclosing a phoenix soaring amidst large peony blooms and dense foliage, the mythical bird depicted with long billowing tail feathers and fine plumage, all framed by a ground of blooming chrysanthemum flowers and curling stems repeated at the waist, apron and legs

Condition

There are typical age cracks, including a 9cm crack to upper surface which has pulled slightly from the surface. Bruises to the underside of the feet and minute flakes to the black lacquer.
