Catalogue Note

In his early days in Vermont, after attending the Castleton Seminary, James Hope taught school in nearby West Rutland. By 1850, he and his wife, Julia, settled in Castleton, but Hope, a lover of the outdoors, frequently walked miles into the wilderness to paint local scenes.

This view of West Rutland, one of his few signed early works, perhaps shows the beginning of the evolution of his painting into a more academic style. Softer lines and finer details stand in contrast with his other early works, most notably, another version of this view offered as lot 143.
