Catalogue Note

For a few years in the early 1850s, before he left Vermont for New York and his work moved in a decidedly academic direction, Hope painted numerous views in the Castleton and West Rutland region, and in many cases, he painted multiple copies of the same view, as is the case here. The present landscape is a smaller version of lot 141, and both are similar to signed version that is also dated 1851. That painting is in a private collection and was exhibited at the Currier Gallery of Art, Manchester, New Hampshire (and appeared in the Autumn 1970 Currier Gallery of Art Bulletin).
