Catalogue Note

Horace and Leander Haldeman were two of seven children of Henry Haldeman (1787-1849) and Frances Steman Haldeman (1794-1826) of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Horace (1820-1883) married Anne Brenneman Haines (1824-1892) in Marietta, Pennsylvania in 1842. Horace enjoyed a distinguished career in the army, serving most of his time in Texas where he was also a noted insect collector, probably inspired by his older brother, Samuel, a noted scientist.

In the portrait with Horace is not his brother Leander, who died in 1822 at four years of age, but more likely his older brother Henry (born in 1816) or his younger brother Lorenzo (born in 1822).
