The subject is said to be Fanny Atkins, who is partly of Native American descent. According to family tradition, the artist was named “Hopkins.” Despite this, the present portrait was long-attributed to Noah North, but when the relationship between Hopkins and North was clarified, it was reattributed to Hopkins.
