Catalogue Note
According to family tradition, the sitter is Harriet Hill (1803-1892). She first married James Smith at Troy, New York, and the couple had three children. Unfortunately James drowned when he fell overboard the sloop Clinton in Haverstraw Bay in 1828. Harriet remarried in 1832 to Stillman Fish, and the family grew to include eight children. Harriet died in 1892 and is buried in Troy.
