Catalogue Note
Stephen Powers (1814-1882) was born in Damariscotta, Maine. A precocious boy, he began teaching at fifteen and was admitted to the bar on his twenty-first birthday. He enjoyed a long career as a prominent attorney and public servant in both New York and in Texas. He also served as a diplomat to Switzerland. In 1849, he moved to Brownsville, Texas. There he married Pauline Victoire Impey Butler and raised five children. He served in various posts in the state and local government, court and in the army.
At an early age, Stephen’s parents died, and he went to Holley, New York to live with his older sister, Elizabeth Powers Darrow (1805-1874). Elizabeth’s husband, Lewis, died a few years after North painted her portrait. She then married the much older Henry Ketcham and moved to nearby Murray.
Portraits of Elizabeth Powers Darrow’s mother-in-law and sister-in-law are in the collection of the Shelburne Museum.
