Catalogue Note

Chapman spent his adult life in Seneca County, New York where he was a successful farmer and, for a period of time, served as the jailer in Ovid and then the sheriff of Romulus. In this portrait, he sits at a table reading an Albany newspaper, possibly the Albany Argus.
