Catalogue Note

The Missionary Herald was the publication of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Relations. In 1836, the Board sent missionaries Dr. Marcus Whitman (1802-1847), a physician, and his wife, Narcissa Prentis (1808-1847), a physics and chemistry teacher, west to the Oregon Country. They settled at Waiilatpu, a Cayuse settlement. For a decade, the couple enjoyed good relations with the local natives while they facilitated the migration of numerous settlers from the east. In November of 1847, in response to a catastrophic measles outbreak, the Cayuse killed the Whitmans.
