Condition

Overall the bronze is in good condition with minor surface dirt, particularly in the crevices, and wear to the patina at the high points consistent with age and handling. The bronze is cast in several sections. There is a slightly open joint around the midriff that is slightly loose. There are joints visible to both shoulders. Very good cast.

Catalogue Note

Starting in 1877, Gustave Doré created thirty eight sculptures including L'Effroi or L'Amour Maternel of which a lager plaster is in the Musée d'art moderne et contemporain, Strasbourg. This model is strongly influenced by the marble titled Le Messie completed by Albert-Ernest Carrier Belleuse in 1867 (Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Church).
