Catalogue Note

The crest and motto are those of Schuster, probably for a member of the 19th and early 20th century London-based banking family of that name.

Compare the infant Mercury head enclosed within similar scrolls and foliage on the handle of this basket with another, Paul de Lamerie, London, 1742, from the collection of John Sheldon, sold Sotheby's, London, 24 October 1985, lot 100.
