Catalogue Note

These exceptionally rare models appear to be unrecorded in the literature. The present pair are faithfully inspired by engraving six 'The Smallest red and green Parrakeet, natural Cignes' from George Edward's A Natural History of Uncommon Birds, published in 1743.

Very few examples of these figures are known of which seemingly only one other pair have survived together. The other pair was formerly in the Marryatt collection (in 1876); Lady Charlotte Schreiber; R. van Hasbroeck (until 1946), then offered for sale at Sotheby's London, 17th December 1946, lots 175 and 176, then withdrawn; and subsequently entered the collection of Irwin Untermyer (by 1957-64), now in the Metropolitan museum of Art, New York, acc. no. 64.101.435, .436, (see Hackenbroch, op. cit.). A single model with similar green colouring from the property of Mrs. Edward Hutton of New York was sold in these rooms, 23rd November 1965, lot 32. A single model from the collection of Mr. and Mrs. Sigmund Katz is in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, gifted in 1988, acc. no. 1988.731.
