painted in the so-called 'flaming tortoise' pattern, with a central coiled dragon, the shaped brown-edged rim decorated with a border of cranes, a pine-tree, bamboo, flowering plants and a mythical creature, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue, incised / mark,

Condition
In overall good appearance. There is faint hairline crack at the rim measuring 4cm. long and a shorter crack extending from it to the rim. Some minor wear to gilded band at centre.

Catalogue Note
A Japanese original of this pattern is illustrated by Masako Shono, Japanisches Arita porzellan im sogenannte, 1973, pl. 55, alongside a Meissen copy of the pattern, pl. 56. A dish in this pattern with Japanese palace inventory numbers was sold Sotheby's London, 29th June 1982, lot 71, previously in the Simon Goldblatt, Esq. collection, sold Sotheby's London, 2nd May 1956, lot 223. Fifteen dishes in this pattern were inventoried in the Japanese Palace in 1770. They are considered to be part of the porcelain ordered for Rudolph Lemaire for export to France.
