Description

  • Porcelain
painted with a profile of a gentleman and a lady depicting fashionable hairstyles titled  'Petit Maitre en grecque.', and 'Coiffure à perles', script titles in gilding underneath, with gilded scroll borders at rims, shield marks in underglaze-blue, impressed numeral 2 to saucer,

Provenance

The collection of Baron Lionel Nathan de Rothschild (paper label to base), the collection of whom was sold at Sotheby's London, 21st April 1937.

Literature

A similar cup and saucer decorated with the subject of hairstyles of the 1770's depicting the 'Cadogan' and 'Herisson a boucles detachees' wigs is in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum, New York, acc. no. 1976.71.22,.23.

Condition

In generally good condition, with some wear to gilding at rims, and script title of saucer only.
