Catalogue Note

The configuration of additional, larger Roman numerals lining the dial and extending across the interior of the hinged doors of the present timepiece was an innovation patented by J. Vergely of Paris in 1925, designed to make the time easier to read.

Cf.: Judy Rudoe, Cartier 1900 - 1939, British Museum, 1997, pg. 132 nos. 70 and 71, for two desk timepieces of similar design made in France for Cartier New York or London, dated circa 1928.
