Lapis lazuli, enamel, jadeite, moonstone and diamond ashtray, Van Cleef & Arpels, 1930s

Composed of a carved lapis lazuli, highlighted with cabochon moonstones within frames millegrain-set with rose diamonds, decorated with a carved jadeite Buddha figure, the base applied with blue enamel, measurements approximately 80 x 90 x 65mm, signed Van Cleef & Arpels. 

Signed Van Cleef & Arpels Paris to one rivet end on base. Head of Buddha broken and restuck. Jadeite pale lavender and green in colour, transparent. with typical colour mottling and inclusions visible to the unaided eye, some surface-reaching. Lapis lazuli deep blue, with typical pyrite and calcite inclusions. Moonstones pale blue, with white schiller. Diamonds bright and lively. Significant wear to blue enamel to base of Buddha. Light scratches to surfaces consistent with age and use. In good condition. Weight approximately 253 grams.
