Catalogue Note

While training at the Munich Academy in the 1870s and 1880s, Max Thedy completed a number of copies after paintings in museums and prominent collections, including works by Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, and Luca Gioradano.  The present painting relates to a section of Gustav Richter's Bau der ägyptischen Pyramiden (1859-1873), a large oil painting commissioned by King Maximilian of Bavaria for Munich's Maximilianeum (Peter Stapf, Der Maler Max Thedy, Cologne, 2014, p. 67, note 67).
