Catalogue Note

In the early 1900s, Sir William Russell Flint worked as a medical illustrator while training at Heatherley’s Art School and independently at the British Museum where he extensively studied female models, finding them a greater challenge than male nudes (Martin Postle and William Vaugn, The Artist’s Model from Etty to Spencer, London, 1999, p. 61).  In 1912, Flint travelled to Rome spending time with  John William Godward an artist equally inspired by the beauty of women. From the 1930s Flint made frequent trips to Spain, entranced by the dancers, gypsies, and fieldworkers in the communities around Seville and Madrid and northern medieval towns of Aragon, Calatayud and Burgos.  While widely recognized for his talent in watercolor, the present work is among the artist’s accomplished oils. Flint’s expressive brushwork builds up the heavy clouds of a summer storm (the artist frequently remarked on the country’s sultry heat) while at the local public-scales women gather, the display of strength and sensuality a hallmark of Flint’s work.
