Catalogue Note

The first item is an essay based on fabricated evidence which aimed at proving Milton a plagiarist. Samuel Johnson here contributed a preface and postscript. This copy includes a 2 page manuscript account of the Lauder affair in the hand of 'C. Francis' dated 1838. Francis has also annotated the copy, marking each passage that Lauder later confessed to inventing.
