Catalogue Note

Pablo Reinoso reinvents everyday objects by transforming and playing with forms and materials, revealing that form and function do not always meet eye to eye. Conflating the role of the designer with that of the sculptor, Reinoso reinterprets the traditional understanding of furniture and takes it towards a new paradigm. Determined to challenge the fundamental notion of design, the artist seeks to place his work in different settings – testing their ability to adapt to their surroundings.  Using what he calls ‘plant strategy’, Reinoso’s raw material is given ‘its own life, growing, searching for light or taking root wherever it wants and needs’.

In the benches from the ‘Spaghetti’ series, the timber winds like lianas and regains its freedom. ‘All my wooden sculptures represent a technical challenge,’ he explains. ‘The wood is not curved, but carved. Now, sculpting flexible volumes that circulate is very complicated. There is a technical difficulty, but we must not feel the effort.’   Through the exceptional craftsmanship of Reinoso, a functional bench turns into a living piece of furniture, offering a surprise at every turn. Between the useful and the beautiful, between art and design, between poetry and symbol, everything in his works intertwines.
