Catalogue Note

Activist and designer Porky Hefer is a prominent creative figure of South Africa. He had worked in advertising for 17 years before starting to sculpt his spaces in 2009 – varying from furniture to hammocks, to public space sculptures. Produced with readily available skills, he embraces his South African heritage and typically works in a bio-mimicry way with more natural materials including leather, wood and straw. He created the collective Animal Farm in 2007.

This woven nest made of kooboo cane and steel reminiscent of weaver birds` skills is almost completely enclosed, engulfing the individual as if in a cocoon. Porky Hefer creates a holistic experience where the individual becomes temporarily immersed in the raw, down-to-earth material.
