Catalogue Note

The present lot was designed for the exhibition 'Furniture for the Ritual of Life' at Blum Helman Gallery, New York, 1987. Sottsass, a master of many materials, here directly confronts marble, a material he once avoided. 'This collection is about developing as much as possible the relationship between materials... Many years ago, I hated marble as a symbol of richness and power. Now... I am able to see marble just as a texture, as a natural. Then it becomes very beautiful and gives you nice feelings.'
