Catalogue Note

Märta Måås-Fjetterström was a keen observer of nature. She was mainly drawn to the more unassuming flowers and motifs; however, she did not feel that things should be woven as a copy of nature. Instead MMF felt nature needed to be stylized and adapted to create a rhythm within the limitations of the loom. Nyponblomman is a perfect example of this, executed in the traditional Nordic rölakan technique. The wild dog roses at the beach near the studio stood as inspiration, but the flowers and leaves have been tamed into a strict geometric design, leaving the color to work as one of few clues to the original inspiration.
