Catalogue Note

Initially trained as a tinsmith and later a blacksmith specialising in metal finishes, Tynell chose metal, principally brass, as the core material of his sculptural lighting, incorporating leather, wicker and cloth into their designs. In 1918, Tynell co founded the metal firm Oy Taito Ab, for which he produced the lighting designs of Alvar Aalto, including the Paimio Sanatorium, Savoy Restaurant, and Viipuri Library. Like Alvar Aalto, Tynell drew much of his inspiration from the landscape of his native Finland, introducing naturalistic forms into many of his works.
