Catalogue Note

With a focus on light in relation to reworked and at times re-purposed or recycled glass, Johanna Grawunder graduated as an architect in Italy. Her background led her to work for Ettore Sottsass for nearly 17 years - from 1985 to 2001 - on some of his major projects and designs. Originally from California, she has worked between Milan and San Francisco since 2011. Often preferring the reflective translucent qualities of glass, this material has come to the very centre of her work alongside aluminium. She has collaborated with B&B Italia, Flos, Glasitalia, on various products and installations, allowing for her cultural heritage to guide her designs.

A particular feature of the Long Term Parking collection is that each of the Lucite (acrylic glass) table tops has their own tinted colour. The continuous aluminium legs form a single piece with the supporting beams, thus acquiring the minimal geometric outline favoured by the artist. Her redistributing of the physical presence of material in relation to lighting effects and colour qualities produce new iterative compositions throughout each unique piece.
