Catalogue Note

In 1954, Max Ingrand was recruited personally by Gio Ponti as artistic director of Fontana Arte. By this point, Ingrand had already established himself a master of glass, working on many important commissions such as the Normandie ocean liner and participating in the 1936 edition of the Milan Triennial. Under his leadership, Ingrand established a fresh and modern line of lighting and products for the firm. His designs built upon the already successful foundation of his predecessor, Pietro Chiesa, yet were distinctly his own. His treatment of the glass was unique, oftentimes chiselling directly into the glass or cutting it roughly to create dynamism and dimension. Through his vision and direction, Ingrand breathed new life into Fontana Arte, channelling light as the basis for his art. The present lot shows Ingrand's ingenuity in combining form with technique, with the central elements hand-chiselled to produce a naturalistic effect.
