Catalogue Note

Riverbank is one of Koon Wai Bong’s landscape paintings on silk apparel representing Chinese culture and marks the beginning of his exploration reworking the classics into new meaning for a contemporary audience. The calm river scene and precise brushwork are reminiscent of Song dynasty landscapes and when combined with a modern changshan, they illustrate the aspirations of a contemporary scholar anxious to maintain a legacy of history. Koon Wai Bong is a leading artist and teacher in Hong Kong whose mixed media installations consistently underscore the significance of Chinese painting in contemporary art.  Koon’s works have been exhibited internationally, and are in the present collections of notable private and public institutions, including M+, Hong Kong Museum of Art, Chinese University of Hong Kong Art Museum, and the Asian Art Museum of San Francisco.
