Catalogue Note

The Yu Ling Long (Exquisite Jade Rock) is the centrepiece of the Yu Yuan gardens in the old city of Shanghai and has been admired for centuries for its craggy and pitted appearance. Liu Dan provides a portrait of the naturally sculpted stone accompanied with a poem by Shi Tao. The present lot was formerly in the collection of Sherman E. Lee (1918-2008), distinguished art historian and expert of Asian art in the United States. As the Director of the Cleveland Museum of Art, he elevated it to rank among top institutions in America and was the trusted advisor for the collection of Mr. and Mrs. John D. Rockefeller III, founder of The Asia Society. The present work was gifted by Liu Dan in April 1998 at the Asia Society Friends of Asian Art annual dinner in New York, honouring Lee's achievements and dedicated support towards Asian art.
