Condition

This work is in good condition overall. The sheet is hinged on the reverse in all 4 corners to the backing board. There is a soft undulation to the sheet, and artist’s pinholes in all 4 corners with some minor, associated tearing to the pinholes. There is some minor surface soiling to the sheet with signs of light handling, particularly along the edges. There is some stray media present, due to the artist’s working method. Framed under Plexiglas.

Catalogue Note

"By 1963-64 the drawings changed to tiny, rectangular shapes with linear, more ordered structures indicating horizontal and vertical movement. These led to the boxes in larger watercolors that are painted to give the impression of a third dimension. By '65, having returned from Germany, Hesse had made a new group of reduced contour drawings that evoked machine elements and medical devices that were erotic and became more volumetric."
