Condition

This work is in good condition overall. Each of the elements are separate from one another. There is evidence of scattered surface soiling and light dust accumulation. There are minor surface irregularities to the elements due to the artist’s working method. Under close inspection, several of the elements exhibit stable craquelure to the pigment as a result of minor scattered creasing to the canvas. The top syrup element exhibits minor scattered areas of pigment loss. The sausage elements, particularly in the creases, exhibit a scattered waxy and opaque appearance to some areas the pigment. The top butter element is not the original to the work, but has been refabricated by the artist. The ceramic plate element is in very good condition overall.

Catalogue Note

"My struggle has been to return painting to the tangible object, which is like returning the personality to touching and feeling the world around it, to offset the tendency to vagueness and abstraction. To remind people of practical activity, to suggest the sense and not to escape from the senses."
