Condition

This work is in very good and sound condition overall. The sculpture is comprised of 2 separate parts. The upper element of the work with the figure fits into the base. The irregular surface texture is due to the artist's working method and chosen medium. There is light surface soiling, scattered minor wear and some minor surface accretions. There is a fine crack noted in the silicone on the underside of the bow element of the ship.

Catalogue Note

“These days, taboo breaking is a pastime akin to golf, or a child’s scavenger hunt. Taboo breakers carry around little scorecards and stubby pencils so they can check off the taboos they are supposedly breaking. McCarthy doesn’t have a scorecard. He’s not breaking taboos. He’s bathing in them.” (Sam Lipsyte, Paul McCarthy, Between Beauty and the Beast: Sculptures, Drawings and Photographs, New York 2006, p. 19)
