Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. The sheet is window matted and cornered to the backing board. There are slight undulations to the sheet due to the artist's choice of medium. Only visible under the mat, there is evidence of light wear and handling along the edges of the sheet. Under very close inspection and underneath the mat, there is a small 1/8 inch tear at the lower left corner of the sheet within the margin. Framed under glass.

Catalogue Note

"When I first made a grid I happened to be thinking of the innocence of trees and then this grid came into my mind and I thought it represented innocence, and I still do, and so I painted it and then I was satisfied. I thought, this is my vision."

Agnes Martin in conversation with Suzan Campbell, May 15, 1989, transcript in Archives of American Art, The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.
