Catalogue Note

As one of the most important young Chinese contemporary artists, Xu Zhen surveyed a group of youngsters about what the phrase “20 years old” evoked for them in terms of colour. Some said red, others blue. The artist collected the answers he was given and used those colours in creating this series of paintings, which were displayed in a high-end showcase, blurring the line between art and commercialism. The artist explains, “Of course I don’t want art sequestered on a lonely island. I believe art must be turbulent and powerful. It can evolve with the times as well as change the times themselves.”
