Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is very light wear at the extreme corners of the canvas, most noticeably in the bottom left corner. Under Ultraviolet light inspection there is evidence of scattered inpainting, which is considered inherent to the work and done before leaving the studio as confirmed by the artist. These areas of inpainting are located as follows: approximately 4 inches from the right edge and 3 inches from the bottom edge; 5 ½ inches from the right edge and 9 inches from the bottom edge; 8 inches from the right edge and 9 inches from the bottom edge and again 8 inches from the left edge and 9 ½ inches from the bottom edge. Under raking light there are scattered, very minor white irregularities in the black background, associated with the aforementioned areas of inpainting. Framed.

"By disrupting painting's assumption of material, process, and placement, Stingel not only bursts open the conventions of painting, but creates unique ways of thinking about the medium and its reception." Francesco Bonami in Exh. Cat., Chicago, Museum of Contemporary Art, Rudolf Stingel, 2007, p. 10
