Catalogue Note

“Steir's pictures create meditative spaces, but they also again and again probe the nature of painting itself, not only its technique, but also its stylistic directions, fashions, rules and categories. Parodying the old question posed by Barnett Newman: 'Who is afraid of red, yellow and blue?'...Steir responds to modernism from the perspective of the early 1990s, with intrepid cascades of color within a still-restrained, minimalist world.”
Doris von Drathen, “Within the Interspace Between Reality and Reality,” in Pat Steir: Paintings, Milan 2007, p. 22
