Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. There is evidence of light wear and handling along the edges including some minor hairline craquelure at the pull margins. Under very close inspection, there are several faint areas of hairline cracking in the lower left corner and several pinpoint brown spot accretions visible throughout. On the reverse, there is a ¼-by-1-inch patched repair to the canvas 10-inches from the right edge and 32-inches from the bottom edge. Under Ultraviolet light inspection, several small areas fluoresce and appear to have benefitted from light retouching: two small spots within the “E” form, the area corresponding to the patched repair and along the left edge, a 1-by-2-inch area approximately 17-inches from the bottom edge. Framed.

Catalogue Note

"This kind of realism in the art of the 1970s is an extension of Pop Art of the previous decade, but without Pop's underlying irony. In Cottingham's cropped, dislocated, and disjointed detail of a store front, great technical expertise is exhibited in the sharply focused, super-real composition of objects, reflections, and perspective."
