Condition

This work is in very good condition overall. Each sheet is mounted verso to the backing board. There is evidence of light wear and handling to the edges of each sheet with associated minor pigment loss and creasing along the edges and corners. Under close inspection and certain raking light, there is evidence of faint, hairline surface scratches and faint pitting to the surface of each sheet. Framed under Plexiglas.

Catalogue Note

“I have always avoided doing portraits as something per se. A face is so powerful and dominates all else. In this series I have hidden the face in a variety of manners, trying to allow other information to surface and define the person, such as by that person’s name, altered name, height, etc. And in the context of others for information by comparison. If art is a mystery, then the face is a betrayer and should be hidden.” John Baldessari
