Catalogue Note

These three chairs are from a set of twenty, with a table, that was produced by Samuel Pratt for the hall of Brougham Hall in Westmorland. They were designed by the architect L.N. Cottingham, an authority on mediaeval archiecture, who was retained by Lord Brougham to provide extensive Gothic additions for the Hall between 1820-43.

Examples of this chair are in the collections of the Victoria and Albert museum (W.2:1, 2-1992); and the Cooper Hewitt  (1991-120-1).
