Condition
The canvas is lined, the paint surface is stable, and the varnish is clear and even. Inspection under ultraviolet light reveals a thick and milky varnish, underneath which small retouchings are visible throughout the composition: to the left and right-hand margins to reduce the appearance of stretcher marks, to the upper right of the sitter's head, through the sitter's dress, most notably in two larger patches in his right sleeve, to the sitter's right cheek, and to a small loss in his right eye. There are also some small strengthenings to the darks in his hair. In overall good condition.
