Description
- Anglo-Dutch School, early 18th Century
- Portrait of a musician, traditionally identified as George Frideric Handel (1685-1759), playing the harp
- oil on canvas
Condition
The following condition report is provided by Henry Gentle who is an external specialist and not an employee of Sotheby's:
The original canvas is lined and the paint layer is stable. The top and bottom edges have been made out to fit the frame. Under u-v light minor restoration can be detected to the lower red table cloth, to reduce paint loss, and beneath the musician's chair. A reduction of some of the shrinkage cracking can be seen along with augmentation of the paint to the hands and other areas where the transparency of the paint layer has allowed the dark ground to dominate. Canvas texture is visible through these areas of transparent paint.
Generally, in a good original and preserved condition.
Removal of the discoloured varnish would improve the tonality.
